Different Types Of Mobile Cranes
With so many different types of cranes available, it can be confusing which one is the right choice for your lifting task. So, in this blog, we are going to explore the different types of mobile cranes available and the kind of jobs where they are most suited.
Franna cranes are compact mobile cranes that are easily transported on public roads. Because the cab of Franna cranes is in front of the boom, the operator has a much better view of the work area.
Franna cranes are powerful for their size, offering a similar lifting capacity to traditional tractor cranes but with more versatility. This versatility is the reason why Franna cranes are some of the most popular pieces of lifting equipment in Australia.
Franna crane specifications
- Lifting capacity 10-25 tonnes
- Turning radius 15.86m
- Maximum hook height 17m
Where to use Franna cranes
Franna cranes are ideal pick and carry cranes and are often used to transport loads across worksites. The excellent manoeuvrability of Franna cranes also makes them suitable for compact worksites where space is at a premium.
All-terrain cranes are for use on rough or uneven ground. They have large off-road style wheels and tyres which offer good ground clearance, allowing them to navigate and lift on rough terrain.
This type of crane also has a high lifting capacity for its size. They can lift to twice as much as a Franna crane but are not that much larger. They do have a larger turning circle, however, so they are not suited to very compact sites.
All-terrain crane specifications
- Lifting capacity 30-40 tonnes
- Turning radius 32m
- Maximum hook height 45m
Where to use all-terrain cranes
All-terrain cranes are best suited to uneven ground or difficult to access sites, including quarries, demolition sites, construction sites and forestry areas.
Truck-mounted cranes offer unrivalled versatility and value for money compared to dedicated cranes. They are suitable for a wide range of jobs, from unloading goods to the lifting and positioning of specialist equipment.
Truck-mounted crane specifications
- Lifting capacity 10-30 tonnes
- Outrigger footprint 6.13m x 7.0m
- Maximum hook height 58m
Where to use truck-mounted cranes
This type of crane is best suited to general material handling duties, including loading and unloading trucks. They are also ideal for moving heavy machinery across the site. Further uses include attaching a personnel cage to carry out inspections.
Crawler cranes consist of a carriage body mounted on tracks, which allows them to operate without the need for outriggers. Crawler cranes have huge lifting capacities and can operate in small work areas, which makes them popular on construction sites.
Their huge lifting capacity and reach make them ideal for a range of applications, however, because they need assembling before use, they are not suitable for one-off jobs where a truck-mounted or Franna crane would be more practical.
Crawler crane specifications
- Lifting capacity 135 tonnes
- Length 76.2mm
- Width 2,990mm
Where to use crawler cranes
The large lifting capacity and compact working area make crawler cranes suitable for a range of activities, including wrecking ball demolitions and the positioning of heavy or oversized items.
